National & International Appointments

1. Sanjay Agarwal’s Reappointment as MD & CEO of AU Small Finance Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the reappointment of Sanjay Agarwal as the Managing Director (MD) & CEO of AU Small Finance Bank (SFB) for an additional three-year term, extending until 2026.
  • Sanjay Agarwal initially took up the role of MD at AU Financiers in February 2008 and later became the MD & CEO of AU Small Finance Bank.
  • Additionally, the RBI has also greenlit the appointment of Uttam Tibrewal as the Whole Time Director of AU SFB, who has been a part of the bank’s board since 2005.

2. Growth in India’s Index of Industrial Production

  • As per the Ministry of Statistics, the country’s index of industrial production (IIP) observed growth, with the manufacturing sector’s output rising by 5.3% in February 2023.
  • Mining output saw a 4.6% increase during the same period, while power generation grew by 8.2%.
  • The growth rate for January 2023 was revised upward to 5.5% from the previously reported 5.2%, resulting in a year-on-year increase of 5.6% for the industrial output in February 2023.

International News

3. India Secures Fifth Position in AI Startup Investments

  • According to Stanford University’s annual AI Index report for 2023, India ranks fifth in investments received by AI-based product startups.
  • Indian AI startups secured a total investment of $3.24 billion in 2022, overtaking nations such as South Korea, Germany, Canada, and Australia.
  • The top four countries leading the chart were the USA, China, UK, and Israel.
  • From 2013 to 2022, Indian AI startups attracted a cumulative funding of $7.73 billion, positioning India as the sixth-leading nation in AI investments over this span. Nearly 40% of this investment was realized in the past year alone, highlighted by the Chennai-based conversational AI startup Uniphore raising $400 million in a Series E funding round in 2022, valuating the company at $2.5 billion.

4. Launch of Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative (APPI)

  • Union Minister of Fisheries, Parshottam Rupala, is slated to launch the Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative (APPI) on April 14, 2023.
  • Concurrently, he will initiate the World Bank-funded Animal Health System Support for One Health (AHSSOH) project.
  • APPI’s main aim is to create an ecosystem for enhanced animal health management using the One Health approach.
  • This initiative will span five years under a Central sector scheme with a budget allocation of Rs. 1228.70 Crores.

5. Commemoration of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Day

  • Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Day is observed yearly on April 13th, remembering the sorrowful events of April 13, 1919.
  • A large peaceful gathering had assembled at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab, to protest the arrest of Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew.
  • Colonel Reginald Dyer, the Military Commander of Amritsar, commanded his troops to encircle the Bagh, seal its entrances, and open fire on the non-violent crowd.
  • This horrific act resulted in the demise of hundreds and left thousands injured, becoming a pivotal moment in India’s history.
  • The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Day in 2023 marks the tragedy’s 104th anniversary.
