National News

1.India’s first Online Radio Station launched.

• India’s 1st Online Radio Station ‘Radio Umang’ was launched recently in India.
• With 24 hours programming, it has found listeners in Hindi speaking regions of India and in over 60 countries worldwide.

2.Defence Ministry of India approved capital acquisition proposals.

• The Defence Ministry of India approved capital acquisition proposals worth Rs.15,935 crore which included the purchase of 7.40 lakh assault rifles 5,719 sniper rifles and light machine guns to bolster the strength of the armed forces.
• For the Indian Navy, the DAC(Defence Acquisition Council) also approved the procurement of Advanced Torpedo Decoy Systems(ATDS) at cost of Rs.850 crore.

3. Centre has proposed to allow premature closure of PPF accounts.

• The Centre has proposed to allow premature closure of Public Provident fund(PPF) accounts. Currently, premature closure is allowed only under specific conditions such as expenditure towards medical treatment and higher education.
• The government has also proposed to allow opening of small savings accounts in the name of minors and allow early closure under certain conditions.

4.Christians in Nagaland were offered free trip to Jerusalem by BJP.

• Nagaland BJP spokesperson James Vizo has said that the party is planning to send senior Christian citizens on a free trip to Jerusalem if it comes to power.
• This comes after a month after the government withdrew Haj subsidy for pilgrims.

International News

1.Pakistan was backing terrorists to continue attacks in India: US.

• Daniel Coats, the US National Intelligence’s Director, has warned that Pakistan-supported terrorist groups would continue to carry out attacks in India.
• He also warned that Pakistan is developing new types of nuclear weapons, including sea-based cruise missiles and long-range ballistic missiles which will introduce new security risks.

2.Drought has been declared as ‘National Disaster’ in South Africa.

• South Africa declared the drought which has struck several parts of the country a “national disaster” after reassessing its magnitude and severity.
• The declaration means that the national government would take responsibility for relief efforts.

3.S Korea will likely to pay Rs.17 crore as N Korea’s Olympics bills.

• To support N Korea’s participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics in the country, S Korea has approved a government funding plan worth over Rs.17 crore.
• S Korea has said that North Korea’s has said that N Korea’s participation opened the door for peace on the Korean peninsula.

4.Trump’s staff turnover higher than 5 most recent US president.

• According to a recent study, the rate of departure of the White House administration staff during US President Donald Trump’s first year in office was higher than his five immediate predecessors.
• The report added that the pace of resignations and firings from the Trump-led White House was triple that of his predecessor Barack Obama’s first year.

Business News
1.India should create more regulated, salaried jobs: World Bank.

• The World Bank has said that India needs to create more regular, salaried jobs with growing earnings rather than self-employment to become a middle-income country by 2047.
• India is classified as a lower middle-income country.

2.Japan’s economy posted its longest period of growth since 1980s boom.

• The world’s third largest economy expanded at an annualized rate of 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2017, the eighth straight quarter of expansion.
• The growth was mainly due to increased consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of the country’s GDP. Japan has been battling deflation for 2 decades.

3.Wipro and Tata Steel among 135 most ethical companies in the world.

• US-based Ethisphere Institute has listed two Indian companies, Tata Steel and Wipro, in the list of World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2018.
• Tata Steel and Wipro are receiving the award for the sixth and seventh time respectively.

4.PNB has detected fraud transactions.

• Punjab National Bank, India’s second largest public lender, has said that it has detected fraudulent transactions worth $1.77 billion(over Rs.11,360 crore) at a Mumbai branch.
• PNB shares fell over 7% after this news. Without naming those involved, PNB said the other banks appeared to have advanced money to these customers abroad.

Sports News
1.Kohli equals all-time win record after 48 ODIs as captain.

• Virat Kohli registered his 37th win as India’s ODI captain against South Africa, equaling the all-time win record after first 48 ODIs as captain. He matched the win record of former captains Clive Lloyd(Windies), Hansie Cronje(S Africa) and Ricky Ponting(Australia).
• Kohli is the First Indian captain to win an ODI series in South Africa.

2.Yadav records most wickets by a spinner in an ODI series in SA.

• Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav took his wickets tally in the series to 16 wickets, the most by a spinner in an ODI series in SA.
• Yadav overtook Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan who took 14 wickets in a tri-series in 1998. Yuzvendra Chahal matched Muralitharan’s mark with 14 wickets.

3.India secured no. 1 ranking in ODI rankings.

• By claiming the first ever ODI series win in SA, India has secured no. 1 position in ODI rankings.
• SA needed to win 3 ODIs to retain no. 1 ranking.
