1. Neeru Chadha to become member of ITLOS

  • International law expert Neeru Chadha hasbeen elected to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Seas.
  • She has become the first Indian woman to be appointed as a judge at the tribunal.
  • She will have a nine-year term from 2017 to 2026.
  • She is only the second woman to be judge of ITLOS in past two decades.

2. Cabinet approves proposal to introduce the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill 2017.

  • Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to introduce a Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill, 2017.
  • It will provide framework for specified financial sector entities to deal with bankruptcy situation in banks, insurance companies and financial sector entities.
  • Bill aims to strengthen and streamline the current framework of deposit insurance for the benefit of a large number of retail depositors.

3. Ramanathan Ramanan to head Atal Mission.

  • Ramanathan Ramanan, senior vice president at TCS, has been appointed as mission director of Atal Innovation Mission.
  • His appointment will be “without pay and allowances but with the provision of entitlement for government accommodation at New Delhi.
  • Atal Innovation Mission aims to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

4. India appoints envoys to Italy, Denmark, Belgium and EU.

  • A number of new diplomatic appointments have been made by government in its missions abroad, including envoys to the European Union, Italy and Denmark.
  • Gaitri Issar Kumar, joint secretary in the President’s Secretariat has been named as India’s Ambassador to Belgium and European Union.
  • Reenat Sandhu has been named as India’s new Ambassador to Italy.
  • AjitVinayakGupte has been named India’s Ambassador to Denmark.

International News
1.David Grossman wins Man Booker Prize.

  • David Grossman of Israel has won the 2017 Man Booker International Prize.
  • He was awarded this prestigious award for his novel “A Horse Walks Into a Bar”.
  • He is the first Israeli writer to receive this prestigious award.
  • The prize money will be split evenly between Mr. Grossman and translator Jessica Cohen.
  • Man Booker Prize is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original novel, written in the English language and published in the UK.

2. US to conduct naval drill in Qatar.

  • Two US Navy vessels arrived in Doha to take part in a joint military exercise with the Qatari Emiri Navy.
  • Qatar hosts the biggest US military base in the Middle East with more than 11,000 troops deployed and more than 100 aircraft operate from there.
  • Military exercise began despite President Donald Trump accusing Qatar of sponsoring terrorism at a very high level.
  • Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and a number of other countries have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar earlier this month.

  • Yes Bankhas partnered with TerraPay to enable real time money transfer to bank accounts in India.
  • A Rupee Drawing Arrangement has signed between the two companies to make instant cross-border money transfer to bank accounts in India.
  • Indians worldwide can walk into TerraPay’s partner outlet and send money to their family and friends back home, instantly in their bank account.
  • India is the world’s largest recipient of remittances. According to World Bank reports, Indian migrants sent $62.7 billion in FY 2016-17, which is greater than FDI inflows to India.

1. Sunil Chhetri surpasses Wayne Rooney.

  • Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri became the fourth highest goal scorer for their nation among active players.
  • With his 54th goal against the Kyrgyz Republic, Sunil Chhetri surpassed England’s star player Wayne Rooney.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list of highest active goal scorers in International Football followed by Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
  • The goal per match ratio of Sunil Chhetri is 0.57 which is better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
