National News

1.SC cuts Tamil Nadu’s water quota in the Cauvery dispute.

• The Supreme Court reduced Tamil Nadu’s water quota from 192 thousand million cubic feet(TMC) to 177.25 TMC awarded to the state by Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in 2007.
• This is 120-year old dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka demanding more share of water to address the water shortage in the states.

2.PM Narendra Modi’s visit is opposed by China.

• China has opposed Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh which China claims as a part of South Tibet. China said it would lodge a diplomatic protest with India over the visit.
• After the India-China Doklam standoff last year, this was PM Narendra Modi’s first visit to the Indian state.

3.Income sources of election candidates and their spouses must be declared: SC.

• The Supreme Court said election candidates will have to disclose their source of income along with that of their spouse and dependents.
• Currently, candidates are required to disclose their and their family’s assets and liabilities.

4.Tax collection assumptions in India’s budget ambitious: IMF.

• Gerry Rice, the IMF Communications Director, has said that the tax collection assumptions in India’s 2018-19 Budget are ambitious.
• He further said that the IMF welcomes the budget targets and is supportive of them.

International News

1.India example of peaceful co-existence of religions: Iran.

• Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President, said that India is a living museum of peaceful co-existence of different ethnicities and religions.
• He further added, “This process is going on for centuries. Shia, Sunnis, Sufis, Hindus, Sikhs and others are living together. They together built their country and their civilization.”

2.Cyril Ramaphosa sworn in as new President of South Africa.

• Cyril Ramaphosa, head of the ruling African National Congress(ANC) has been sworn in as South Africa’s new President.
• After the resignation of Jacob Zuma, Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as the new president of South Africa by the ruling party politicians.

3.Ehtiopia’s PM resigned to smooth path for political reform.

• Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopia’s PM, suddenly resigned in what he described as a bid to smooth reforms, following years of violent unrest that threatened the ruling party’s hold on Africa’s second most populous nation.
• The resignation followed a wave of strikes this week in towns near the capital and demonstrations successfully demanding the release of more opposition leaders.

4.Iran President arrives in India for 3-day visit.

• Iran President Rouhani arrived in India for a three-day visit and was received by Union Minister RK Singh.
• Rouhani’s visit comes after the inauguration of the first phase of Iran’s Chabahar Port, to be operated by India for ten years, in December.

Business News
1.Was a little jealous of SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch: Branson.

• Richard Branson, Virgin Group Founder, has admitted that he was a ‘little bit jealous’ of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket launch which took place earlier this month.
• He added that he will be very disappointed if his spaceflight company Virgin Galactic is not in space in the next few months.

2.FedEx confirms breach, passports, driving licenses leaked.

• FedEx, American package delivery company, has confirmed that it was hit with a breach which reportedly leaked passports, driving licenses, and other security IDs of over one lakh customers.
• FedEx claimed that no information was misappropriated.

3.Ratan Tata named in Israeli PM’s bribery case: Report.

• According to a report, the name of Tata Group’s Chairman Ratan Tata was mentioned in the Israeli police’s recommendation to prosecute Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in two bribery cases.
• The report also said, “According to police, Netanyahu tried to push forward a project to help Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan who sought to promote it as part of his partnership with Tata”.

4.Haruhiko Kuroda reappointed as Bank of Japan Chief.

• Harukiho Kuroda has been appointed as Bank of Japan Governor by the Japan Government for another term and chose an advocate of bolder monetary easing as one of his deputies, a sign the central bank will be in no rush to dial back its massive stimulus program.
• The government also submitted to parliament its nomination of Masazumi Wakatabe, a professor at Waseda University and an advocate of aggressive monetary easing, as deputy governor. Bank of Japan is the Central Bank of Japan having headquarters at Tokyo.

Sports News
1.Australia registered highest-ever successful T20I run chase.

• Australia chased down target of 244 against New Zealand to register the highest ever successful chase in T20I cricket.
• Previously, the highest target successfully chased down in a T20I was 232 by Windies against South Africa in 2015.

2.Martin Guptill becomes highest run-scorer in T20Is.

• Martin Guptill, New Zealand player, surpassed former Kiwi captain Brendon McCullum’s tally of 2,140 runs to become the highest run-scorer in T20I cricket.
• Virat Kohli is the third highest run-scorer in T20Is, with 1,956 runs.

3.Caroline Wozniacki complains about opponent’s grunting.

• In Qatar Open quarter finals, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki complained and apparently mocked her opponent Monica Niculescu’s grunting.
• She later complained that her opponent had used “unfair methods” during the match.
