1. Twenty-First Iteration of Annual Naval Exercise between India and France

  • The Western Seaboard witnessed the 21st iteration of the bilateral naval exercise ‘VARUNA’ between India and France from January 16-20, 2023.
  • Exercise participants engaged in advanced air defence drills, tactical manoeuvres, surface firings, underway replenishment, among other maritime operations. Initiated in 1993, it was christened “VARUNA” in 2001.

2. Radio Detection Technology Collaboration between Indian Institute of Science and McGill University

  • Astronomers from McGill University in Canada and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) detected radio waves from atomic hydrogen in a distant galaxy.
  • Data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune facilitated this discovery. The results were featured in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. This marks the first observation of strong lensing of 21 cm emission from a galaxy.

3. Memorandum of Understanding to Facilitate Low-Interest Loans for Farmers

  • An MoU was signed between the Warehousing Development Regulatory Authority (WDRA) and SBI with the intent to offer farmers access to low-interest loans.
  • The aim is to disseminate information about the innovative marketing setup that exclusively acknowledges e-NWRs (electronic Negotiable Warehouse Receipt) as collateral. Additionally, it seeks to educate prospective depositors about the merits of agricultural pledge finance in India.

4. Viacom18 Bags Broadcast Rights for Women’s IPL

  • Viacom18 secured the broadcast rights for the Women’s IPL with a hefty bid of Rs. [amount not specified] for a span of five years.

  • Being a BBPOU enables users to make payments for utilities like electricity, phone, gas, loans, credit cards, and municipal taxes through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). The BBPS is overseen by the National Payments Corporation of India. Until now, Paytm Payments Bank had been conducting operations with RBI’s interim approval.
