1.KUSUM scheme to install grid connected solar plants in rural India.

• The Indian government is in process of formulating ‘Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan(KUSUM) scheme’ to harness solar power for rural India.
• KUSUM will build 10,000 MW solar plant and provide 1.75 million off-grid agricultural solar pumps.

2.7th Women’s Science Congress inaugurated in Imphal.

• The Women Science Congress, 2018 was inaugurated in the backdrop of the ongoing 105th Indian Science Congress on its third day being held at Manipur University, Imphal.
• The first Women Science Congress was held in 2012.

3.President released coins commemorating Nabakalebara Festival.

• Commemorating Lord Jagannath’s Nabakalebara festival, President Ram Nath Kovind released coins in denominations of Rs 10 and Rs 1,000.
• The coins had been slated for release during the mega festival, celebrated once every 12 to 19 years, but the Union finance ministry had rejected a design sent by the state government as it featured the deities’ feet .

4.Lok Sabha passes amendment to stonewall scrutiny of foreign poll funding.

• The Lok Sabha has passed a bill that will exempt political parties from the scrutiny of funds they have received from abroad since 1976.
• The Lok Sabha passed, amid chaotic protests by the opposition parties, 211 amendments to the Finance Bill 2018.

International News

1.Worldwide Cost of Living Report 2018 released.

• Singapore remains the most expensive city in the world, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Worldwide Cost of Living report 2018.
• Damascus, the capital of war-ravaged Syria, is the cheapest city for living in the world, followed by Venezuela’s capital Caracas.

2.1st India-Japan workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction inaugurated.

• Dr. Rajiv Kumar, the Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, inaugurated the first India-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction in New Delhi.
• The two-day workshop is being jointly organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority(NDMA) and Government of Japan. Prime Minister Modi is the Chairman of NDMA.

3.Vladimir Putin wins historic 4th term as Russian President.

• Russian President Vladimir Putin stormed to victory in presidential election, giving him another six years in power.
• Putin, who has ruled Russia for almost two decades, got more than 75% of the vote according to preliminary results.

4.Donald Trump calls for death penalty for drug dealers.

• The White House has said that US President Donald Trump’s administration has called for tougher penalties for drug dealers including death penalty under current laws.
• This is reportedly is a part of the government’s efforts to combat the country’s opioid crisis, which claimed more than 40,000 lives in 2016.

Business News
1.India needs to move more into manufacturing.

• Nobel-winning economist Paul Krugman has said that India needs to move more into manufacturing to create jobs for unskilled people.
• He further said that India has to move millions of people from agriculture, and manufacturing is the suitable sector.

2.Informal WTO Ministerial meeting held in New Delhi.

• Representatives from 50 countries gathered in New Delhi for a two-day Informal World Trade Organisation(WTO) ministerial meeting.
• According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the informal meeting of ministers will provide an opportunity to engage in free and frank discussions with the hope that it will lead to political guidance on some major issues.

3.No airline-like dynamic pricing in Railways: Piyush Goyal.

• Piyush Goyal, Railway Minister, has scrapped a committee’s suggestion to introduce airline-like dynamic fares in Railways, officials said.
• The committee suggested ticket prices that vary on factors like travel during festival times, time taken to reach destination and berth preference among others.

Sports News
1.Federer loses final on tie breaker, ends 17-game win streak.

• In the third-set tie-breaker in the final of Indian Wells Masters, world no. 1 Roger Federer suffered the first loss of 2018 which also snapped his unbeaten streak at 17 wins, after going against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro.
• Federer was chasing a record sixth title at the tournament, while the win gave Del Potro his first Masters title.

2.India now has second-most wins in T20I cricket.

• With the victory against Bangladesh in the T20I tri-series final, the Indian team has now registered the second most victories in the shortest format.
• India registered 61 wins in 99 T20Is and overtook South Africa’s 60 victories out of 103 T20Is till now.

3.Dinesh Karthik first Indian to win a T20I with a last-ball six.

• Dinesh Karthik has become the first Indian to win a T20I with a six off the match’s last ball.
• Further, Karthik is the first batsman in T20Is to hit a six when at least 5 runs were required to win off the final delivery.
