National News
1. India and Russia ink nuclear plant pact.

  • India and Russia have signed agreement on setting up two more units of a nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.
  • The reactors will be built by Nuclear Power Corporation of India and Russia’s Atomstroyexport.
  • It will cost about Rs 50,000 crore, half of it being funded by Russia as loan.
  • The two countries also decided to hold the first tri-Services exercises, named ‘Indra-2017,’ this year.

2. Prithvi-II successfully test-fired.

  • India successfully test-fired it’s indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile from a test range in Odisha.
  • The Prithvi-II missile is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines.
  • It a surface-to-surface medium range ballistic missile and has a strike range of 350 km.
  • It is a joint initiative of Defence Research and Development Organisation and Bharat Dynamics Limited.

 
3. Odisha’s first mega food park opens.

  • Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Minister of Food Processing Industries inaugurated first Mega Food Park in the state of Odisha.
  • This is the 7th Mega Food Park operationalized in the last 3 years by the government.
  • Government of India has provided a financial assistance of Rs. 50 Crore to the project.
  • The Food Park will leverage an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in 25-30 food processing units in the park and generate a turnover of about Rs. 450-500 Crore annually.

4. Indian film Ralang Road to compete for top spot at Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

  • Ralang Road will represent India at the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival at Karlovy Vary.
  • Ralang Road has been nominated for the Crystal Globe Award along with 11 other films from around the world.
  • It has been directed by Karma Takapa and produced by HumanTrail Pictures.
  • It will be after 13 years that an Indian film will compete with other international films at this film festival.

International News
1. Japan launches satellite to improve GPS.

  • Japan has launched a new satellite to improve the global positioning system’s accuracy and establish an efficient communication system in the event of natural disasters.
  • Michibiki 2 is Japan’s second Quasi-Zenith satellite.
  • The first Michibiki satellite was launched in September 2010. JAXA plans to launch two more by March 2018.
  • The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries launched the latest version of the H-IIA rocket with the Michibiki 2 communications satellite.

2. China becomes fastest growing economy.

  • China overtook India as World’s fastest growing economy.
  • India’s GDP growth slowed to 6.1% in the fourth quarter while China recorded a growth rate of 6.9%.
  • The GDP growth for the year also fell from 8% to 7.1%.
  • In terms of annual GDP growth, India remains the fastest growing major economy in the world.

3. Trump pulls US out of Paris Climate Accord

  • US president Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord.
  • Trump said that the Paris agreement gives undue advantage to India and China, the world’s leading polluters.
  • 195 countries have signed this agreement. By pulling out of the deal US will join Syria and Nicaragua as nations who are not part of the deal.
  • Paris Climate Accord is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.
  • The objective of this agreement is to limit the global average temperature to below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. 

Business News
1. Airtel-Telenor merger gets Regulatory approval.

  • Bharti Airtel has received the merger approval between Airtel and Telenor Communications from SEBI, BSE and NSE.
  • The Telenor will give Bharti Airtel additional spectrum in 1,800 MHz band besides a foothold in seven circles.
  • Airtel in February announced to buy Telenor’s India operations.
  • The deal was estimated to be in the range of Rs. 1,800-Rs. 2,000 crores.

Sports News
1. West Indies cricket team officially renamed.

  • The West Indies Cricket Board have officially changed their name to Cricket West Indies.
  • While West Indies cricket team has been officially renamed as WINDIES.
  • Carlos Brathwaite is captain of the West Indies Twenty20 International team while Jason Holder is the captain of the West Indies Test and One Day International team.
