1. First Transgender Election Ambassador

• Social Worker and Activist Gauri Sawant of Mumbai has become First Transgender Election Ambassador.
• Transgenders got the right to vote for the first time in 2014.

2. ‘Conquer Exam, Be a Warrior’ Mobile App

• It is a mobile application to cope with exam related stress and anxiety for students and parents.
• It is developed by Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar, Gujarat with National Mental Health Program, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat.

3. World’s Longest Sandstone Cave

• India’s deepest shaft cave Krem Um Ladaw has been discovered in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district.
• The world’s longest sandstone cave named Krem Puri was recently discovered in Meghalaya. It has a staggering length of 24.5 km, almost three times the height of Mount Everest, and contains some dinosaur fossils from 66-76 million years ago as well.

International News

1. Alan Krueger passes away

• Alan Bennett Krueger was an American economist who was the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at Princeton University and Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
• He was a labor economist who advised Bill Clinton and Barack Obama during their presidencies.

2. Exercise Sary-Arka-Antiterror 2019

• ‘Sary-Arka-Antiterror 2019’ is the joint anti-terrorism exercise among SCO Members.
• It was announced during the 34th meeting of the SCO’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) council held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

3. World Water Day

• World Water Day is an annual UN observance day on 22nd March that highlights the importance of freshwater.
• The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. World Water Day is celebrated around the world with a variety of events. These can be educational, theatrical, musical or lobbying in nature.
• The theme for 2019 is “Leaving no one behind” and encourages people to consider marginalized groups as these are often overlooked and discriminated against when they try to access safe water.

4. Astana as Nursultan

• Kazakhstan’s Parliament has voted to rename country’s capital Astana as Nursultan.
• It was in honour of long-time ruler Nursultan Nazarbayev.
• Kazakhstan, a Central Asian country and former Soviet republic, extends from the Caspian Sea in the west to the Altai Mountains at its eastern border with China and Russia.

1. Templeton Prize

• Brazilian Physicist and Astronomer Marcelo Gleiser has been awarded Templeton Prize 2019.
• The Templeton Prize is an annual award granted to a living person who, in the estimation of the judges, “has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works”.

2. Windham–Campbell Literature Prizes

• Writer Raghu Karnad has won Windham–Campbell Literature Prizes under non-fiction category for his Book ‘Farthest Field: An Indian Story of the Second World War (2015)’.
• Farthest Field narrates the lost epic of India’s war, in which the largest volunteer army in history fought for the British Empire, even as its countrymen fought to be free of it.
• The Donald Windham Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes is an American literary award which offers prizes in four categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama. The award was established at Yale University in 2011 with the first prizes presented in 2013.

3. EIU Worldwide Cost of Living Survey

• Singapore, Paris and Hong Kong share the title of the world’s most expensive city.
• Venezuelan Capital Caracas is the Cheapest City in the world.
• Bengaluru, Chennai and New Delhi are among the 10 cheapest Cities in the world.
• The Economist Intelligence Unit is a British business within the Economist Group providing forecasting and advisory services through research and analysis, such as monthly country reports, five-year country economic forecasts, country risk service reports, and industry reports.

4. World’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy for 2019

• Piyush Goyal and Dr Harsh Vardhan have been named in the ‘World’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy for 2019’.
• A total of 7 Indians are in the List
• Piyush Goyal has led fast-track electrification of around 18000 not-electrified villages.
• Harsh Vardhan launched the anti-plastic bag campaign in Delhi and ‘Green Shopper Campaign’ to promotes business partnerships with manufactures of environment-friendly products.

Sports News

1. Asian Wrestling Championship

• United World Wrestling has revoked the hosting rights from India for the junior Asian Championship.
• It will be now held in Thailand.
• This came after the denial of visas to Pakistan’s shooters by India for the ISSF World Cup 2019.
• Asian Wrestling Championships is the Wrestling Asian Championship organized by the Asian Associated Wrestling Committee. The men’s tournament began in 1979 and The women’s tournament was first staged in 1996, and it has been held every year.

2. Special Olympics World Summer Games

• India has returned with 368 medals (85 Gold, 154 Silver and 129 Bronze) in Special Olympics World Summer Games.
• The Special Olympics World Games are an international sporting competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities, organized by the IOC-recognised Special Olympics organisation.
• The Special Olympics World Summer Games was held at Abu Dhabi, UAE

3. Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for Men’s Player of the Year

• New Zealand Cricket Captain Kane Williamson has won Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for Men’s Player of the Year.
• Sir Richard John Hadlee MBE is a New Zealand former cricketer, regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers and all-rounders in cricketing history. Hadlee was appointed MBE in 1980 and knighted in 1990 for services to cricket. He is a former chairman of the New Zealand board of selectors.
• An MBE is a British honour that is awarded to a person by the King or Queen for a particular achievement. MBE is an abbreviation for ‘Member of the Order of the British Empire’. He had to go to Buckingham Palace to accept an MBE from the Queen.
