National News
1. Kulbhushan Jadhav files mercy petition

The Pakistan army announced that national Kulbhushan Jadhav, awaiting death sentence in its country, has filed a mercy petition before its army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Pakistan claims that Jhadav has admitted to his involvement in espionage, terrorist and subversive activities in Pakistan
In a recent development on the long standing issue impacting India Pakistan diplomatic ties, India dismissed these remarks as “farcical” and said “manufactured facts” cannot alter the reality in the case.
Jadhav had been sentenced to death by a military court in April this year for espionage and terrorism. International Court of Justice in May halted the execution on India’s appeal.

2. Uttarakhand and Haryana become Open Defecation Free states.

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission Uttarakhand and Haryana have become the fourth and fifth Open Defecation Free states of India.
The two states have joined the league of c, which were the first three states to be declared open defecation free.
Uttarakhand’s 13 districts, 95 blocks, 7,256 gram panchayats and 1,5751 villages, while Haryana has 21 districts, 124 blocks, and 6,083 gram panchayats, all of which have declared themselves as ODF.
The Swachh Bharat campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

3. Punjab allows sale of liquor in hotels on highway.

The Punjab Assembly amended the state Excise Act, 1914, allowing the sale of liquor at hotels, restaurants and clubs within 500 metres of highways in the state.
This amendment bypasses the Supreme Court’s December 2016 order, which prohibits the sale of alcohol within 500 metres of state and national highways.
Punjab is the first State to take the amendment route to make way for liquor sale near highways.

4. Uttrakhand government banned by the High Court from purchasing Cars and Luxury Items.

The Uttarakhand High Court has put a ban on purchase of cars, mobile phones and other luxury items by the government.
It took the step after taking a stern view of the state government’s failure to provide basic minimum amenities to children in the state-run schools.
The mandatory directions were given by the High Court on a plea by Deepak Rana.

5. Govt announces cities under Smart City Mission

Central govt. has announced a new list of 30 cities to be developed as smart cities.
Thiruvananthapuram took the first slot, followed Naya Raipur, Rajkot, Amaravati and Patna.
With this the total number of cities picked up so far under Smart City Mission has gone upto 90.
45 cities contested for 40 available smart city slots but only 30 were selected to ensure feasible and workable plans.
An investment of Rs 57,393 crore has been proposed for development of these 30 cities.

International News
1. Saudi sends list of demands to Qatar

Kuwait, which is mediating the crisis, handed over the 13-point list prepared by the Arab countries to Doha.
Three weeks after they first cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other West Asian countries placed a list of demands before the kingdom.
The major demands are: Cut ties with Iran, hand over extremists and shut down Al Jazeera.

2. UK to give ‘UK Settled Status’ to EU Citizens

UK PM Theresa May has told European Union leaders that any EU citizen living in UK for five years will be given “UK settled status” after Brexit.
The new immigration status would grant EU citizens the right to stay in the UK and get health, education and other benefits.
May also demanded same rights for UK citizens in EU states.

3. EU to extend economic sanctions against Russia.

European Union leaders have decided to extend economic sanctions against Russia.
EU will extend economic sanctions against Russia for their lack of implementing the Minsk agreement.
Earlier this week, the European Union formally rolled over for another year sanctions imposed over Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

1. Altice USA raises $1.9 billion in IPO

Cable operator Altice USA has raised US$1.9bn in the biggest initial public offering since the year 2000.
It is the second largest IPO of 2017, giving the company a market capitalisation of roughly US$22bn.
Altice USA is the fourth-largest U.S. cable company by customers, with about 4.9 million customers.

2. Tata Power offers to sell 51% stake in loss-making Mundra

Tata Power has offered to sell 51% stake in its 4,000 MW Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project to Gujarat for Re 1.
Similar moves are being contemplated by Adani Power and Essar Power, which also have power projects based on imported coal.
Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd is the Tata Power unit operating the Mundra project and CGPL has an outstanding loan of Rs 10,159 crore

3. SBI and other lenders start bankruptcy proceedings against three steel companies

The State Bank of India and other lenders sent accounts of three non-performing companies – Bhushan Steel, Essar Steel and Electrosteel Steels – to the National Company Law Tribunal for further action under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code
Bhushan Steel, Essar Steel and Electrosteel Steels together have almost Rs 1 lakh crore of bad debts.
The RBI had on June 13 identified 12 non-performing accounts, which account for about 25% of the country’s total bad loans, and said they must now undergo bankruptcy proceedings.

1. Afghanistan and Ireland granted Test status by ICC.

Ireland and Afghanistan have been granted Test status by the International Cricket Council after becoming 11th and 12th full ICC members.
They are the first admissions since Bangladesh gained Test status in 2000, increasing the number of countries competing at the top level of international cricket to 12.
Ireland’s first Test is likely to be against Afghanistan next year.

2. Saina Nehwal loses to world No 6 Sun Yu in quarter finals

In the ongoing badminton Australian Open Superseries, 16th-ranked Nehwal was beaten 21-17, 10-21, 21-17 by world No 6 Sun Yu of China in a match that lasted 78 minutes.
PV Sindhu also got knocked out in the quarter-finals today. She losta three-game match to world No 1 Tai Tzu Ying.
As a result of today’s matches, K Srikanth is the only Indian shuttler still alive in the tournament.
