National News

1. New Bharat Ratna Awardees

• Pranab Mukherjee :- Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is an Indian politician who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017. He is a Bharat Ratna awardee, awarded in 2019 by President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
• Bhupen Hazarika (Posthumous):- Bhupen Hazarika was an Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, singer, poet and film-maker from Assam, widely known as Sudhakantha.
• Nanaji Deshmukh (Posthumous):- Nanaji Deshmukh was a social activist from India. He worked in the fields of education, health, and rural self-reliance. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and Bharat Ratna in January 2019 by the Government of India.
• The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Instituted in 1954, the award is conferred “in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order”, without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex.

• Although there is no formal nomination process, recommendations for the award can only be made by the Prime Minister to the President with a maximum number of three nominees being awarded per year.
• In 1999, four individuals were awarded the honour. The recipient receives a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion without any monetary grant.

2. Krishna Sobti passes away

• Hindi writer and essayist Krishna Sobti has passed away at 94.
• She won Sahitya Akademi Award in 1980 for her novel ‘Zindaginama’.
• She was also awarded the Jnanpith in 2017 for contributing in Indian literature.

3. Fourth Edition of Bharat Parv

• The Fourth edition of Bharat Parv which will showcase the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ has started at Red Fort in New Delhi.
• The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country’s transition towards becoming an independent republic.
• 26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by British Regime.

4. Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi

• Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi has become the first woman for leading an all-men Army contingent in Republic Day parade.
• The artillery gun system M777 American Ultra-Light Howitzers, recently acquired from the US and K9 Vajra, a self-propelled artillery gun will be new additions in the Republic Day Parade.

International News

1. New Malaysian King

• Sultan Abdullah Ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah has been named as the 16th King of Malaysia.

2. Russell Baker Passes away

• Russell Wayne Baker was an American journalist, narrator, writer of Pulitzer Prize-winning satirical commentary and self-critical prose, and author of Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography Growing Up. It was the first Pulitzer for commentary awarded to a humorist.
• The Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States.

3. Bangsamoro Autonomous Region

• Philippines will get a new Muslim Autonomous Region ‘ Bangsamoro Autonomous Region’ after referendum in the country.

4. ‘National Drink’ of Pakistan

• Pakistan Govt. has declared Sugarcane Juice as the ‘National Drink’ of Pakistan.

1. World Economic Situation and Prospects 2019

• World Economic Situation and Prospects 2019 Report is released by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
• Global Growth Rate is expected at 3.0% for 2019 and 2020.
• India with 7.6% in 2019-20, may continue to remain the World’s Fastest-Growing Large Economy in 2019 and in 2020
• In Current Fiscal the Growth Rate of India is 7.4%.

2. Global Investors Meet (GIM)

• The two-day Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Chennai was concluded.
• Investments with agreements worth over Rs 3 trillion will create 1.05 million jobs in a state Tamil Nadu.

3. Currency Swap Fund for SAARC

• Govt. of India has amended the framework on Currency Swap Arrangement for SAARC member countries
• India has incorporated a stand-by facility of $ 400 million to assist countries Sri Lanka and Maldives.
• A currency swap is an agreement in which two parties exchange the principal amount of a loan and the interest in one currency for the principal and interest in another currency. At the inception of the swap, the equivalent principal amounts are exchanged at the spot rate.

4. Automobile manufacturer Renault’s New Appointments

• CEO :- Thierry Bolloré
• Groupe Renault is a French multinational automobile manufacturer established in 1899. The company produces a range of cars and vans, and in the past has manufactured trucks, tractors, tanks, buses/coaches and auto-rail vehicles.

1. Danielle Hazell has retired

• England Women’s cricketer Danielle Hazell has retired from cricket.
• Danielle Hazell is an English former cricketer. Born in Durham in 1988 she plays for the Sapphires in the ‘Super Fours’ competition and was a late inclusion into England’s successful World Twenty20 squad in 2009.

2. Australian Open

• Naomi Osaka from Japan has won the final in the Australian Open Final defeating Petra Kvitová of Czech Republic.
• The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

3. 2019 Indonesia Masters (badminton)

• Saina Nehwal will now face Spain’s three-time World Champion and reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin in the final.
• The 2019 Indonesia Masters, officially the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2019, is a badminton tournament that will take place at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Indonesia from 22 to 27 January 2019 and has a total purse of $350,000.
