National News

1. Fourth National Consultation of Ministers of States & UTs In-charge of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer affairs

• The fourth National Consultation Meeting of Ministers of States & UTs, in-charge of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs is being held on 29th June 2018 in New Delhi. The meeting will be chaired by Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, and Food & Public Distribution.
• High on the agenda of this meeting will be a discussion on measures required to maintain and manage prices of essential food items at a reasonable level through appropriate policy intervention.

2. Hindi is the most spoken language in India, Bengali second

• Hindi is the mother tongue of 43.63% Indians, making it the country’s most spoken language, followed by Bengali.
• Marathi has replaced Telugu as the third most spoken language in the nation. While Sanskrit is least spoken, Urdu became the seventh most spoken language in India.

3. “Home Minister’s Special Operation Medal”

• The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has approved the institution of “Home Minister’s Special Operation Medal”. Police Officers of States & Union Territories, Central Police Organisations (CPOs), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Security Organisation involved in Special Operations will be eligible.
• The Union Home Minister has also instituted three more Medals, – the Antarik Suraksha Medal, Asadharan Aashuchan Padak, and Utkrisht & Ati-Utkrisht Seva Medal.

4. Government approves draft Act to replace UGC with Higher Education Commission

• Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar on June 27, 2018, proposed a draft bill to repeal the University Grants Commission (UGC) and set up the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), a move that aims to reform higher education in India.
• The Act entitled ‘Higher Education Commission of India Act, 2018 (Repeal of University Grants Commission Act)’ revamps UGC Act, 1951 and its parent legislation completely. The HECI Act, 2018 is expected to be introduced in Parliament in the upcoming monsoon session.

5. Passport Seva App

• External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launched the new Passport Seva App. Now, people can apply for a passport from any part of the country through the App. External Affairs Minister has launched Mobile Passport Application on the occasion of Passport Seva Divas (26 June) in New Delhi.
• Police verification will be done on the address, provided by the applicant on the app and passport will be dispatched on the same address.

International News

1. Emergency declared in Papua New Guinea over Polio outbreak

• A public health emergency has been declared in three Papua New Guinea (PNG) provinces as the country responds to its first polio outbreak in 18 years when it was declared free of the disease.
• As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), the virus was detected in a six-year-old boy in April this year. Later, it was found that the same virus strain has been identified in other healthy children in the same locality and community. That declared an official outbreak.

2. Pakistan’s National Security Advisor Resigns

• Pakistan’s National Security Advisor Nasser Khan Janjua resigned from his post.
• Succeeding Sartaj Aziz, Janjua took over as Pakistan’s NSA in October 2015.

3. Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC)

• World’s largest multilateral naval exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) begun off Hawaii in the Western Pacific Ocean. The two-month long biennial exercise is likely to be attended by navies of 26 countries including India.
• Indian Naval Ship Sahyadri has already reached the Pearl Harbour in Hawaii to participate in the 26th edition of RIMPAC exercise.

4. World Food Prize

• Lawrence Haddad (British economist and food policy researcher) and Dr David Nabarro(Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change) are named as the 2018 World Food Prize recipients.
• The World Food Prize was created by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Norman Borlaug in 1986 to recognize scientists and others who have improved the quality and availability of food.

Business News

1. Rupee falls to all-time low of 69.09 against US dollar

• The rupee hit the all-time low of 69.09 against the US dollar on June 28, 2018, falling past 69 marks for the first time ever. The previous record low of rupee was 68.86 on November 24, 2016.
• The fall can be attributed to the week-long rise in the crude prices amid concerns of higher inflation and current account deficit.

2. The 222nd meeting of the Central Board of Trustees and EPF

• The 222nd meeting of the Central Board of Trustees, EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) was held under the chairmanship of Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment (Independent Charge) Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar at New Delhi.
• 75% of the total fund can be availed by a member who ceases to be in employment for a continuous period not less than one month.

3. S Ramesh Appointed Chairman of CBIC

• Senior bureaucrat S Ramesh has been appointed as chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the apex policy-making body for indirect taxes. He succeeded Vanaja N Sarna.
• The CBIC, which works under the Finance Ministry, is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members.

4. Financial Action Task Force puts Pakistan on ‘grey list’

• The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) added Pakistan to its ‘grey list’ of countries involved in providing monetary assistance to terrorism and related causes. The decision was taken during FATF meeting on Money Laundering in Paris.
• At the FATF talks in Paris, a delegation led by Dr Shamshad Akhtar, Pakistani Interim Minister for Finance and Planning apprised the FATF of steps taken by Pakistan to curb terror financing and money laundering, pleading removal of Pakistan’s name from FATF grey-list.

Sports News

1. Defending champions Germany are out of the World Cup

• Germany crash out of World Cup in the group stage for the first time in history after losing 0-2 to South Korea
• Defending champions France (1998), Italy (2006), and Spain (2010) made first-round exits in 2002, 2010, and 2014 World Cup Edition respectively.

2. Manu Bhaker won the top prize in 10m air pistol event at ISSF Junior World Cup

• Sixteen-year-old Manu Bhaker won the top prize in 10m air pistol event at ISSF Junior World Cup in Germany.
• This was Manu’s seventh ISSF individual gold in the year, third with a world record.

3. India became the seventh team to have played 100 T20I matches.

• India defeated Ireland in the first T20I of the two-match series in Dublin to register their 62nd outright T20I victory, the most by a team after 100 T20Is.
• South Africa held the previous record of winning the most number of matches (59) after 100 T20Is.
