1. Government approves major defense reforms: Arun Jaitley

  • In major reform of the Indian armed forces to improve the combat efficiency, the Unions Cabinet approved a series of recommendations that would redeploy 57,000 soldiers in non-core areas to operational duties.
  • Arun Jaitley said that 65 out of 99 recommendations of the Shetkar Committee has been accepted by the government .

2. IIM-A opens matrimonial website for people with HIV.

  • A team of researchers at Indian Institute Management-Ahmadabad has developed a matrimonial website for HIV positive people to find them a partner and facilitate social integration.
  • It was created as a project for the NGO, Gujarat State Network of People living with HIV/AIDS.

3. Andhra CM announces Friday as Day of Helping Hand.

  • Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu has declared Friday as the ‘day of Helping Hand’.
  • He will meet with the poor and Underprivileged sections of the society on every Friday.

International News

1. PM Modi to attend 9th BRICS summit in China.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend 9th BRICS summit in Xiamen, China.
  • Subsequently, PM will pay a state visit to Myanmar.

2. Hurricane Harvey could cost $100bn.

  • Hurricane Harvey, the most powerful storm to hit US’ Texas in more than 50 years could cost for USD 100bn, an insurance analyst has claimed.
  • The Hurricane Harvey storm has so far claimed at least 17 lives and authorities estimate 30,000 people will need shelter.

3.Pakistan suspends official talks and Visits with US.

  • Pakistan has suspended official visits and talks concerned with the U.S. to protest against President Donald Trump’s criticism of Islamabad for providing safe havens to militants.
  • It was disclosed by Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif in the Senate, which converted itself into a committee to discuss the deteriorating relations with the U.S.

Business News

1. IHCL appoints Puneet Chhatwal as MD,CEO.

  • Tata group hospitality firm Indian Hotels Company Ltd(IHCL) has appointed Duetsche Hospitality CEP Puneet Chhatwal as its MD and CEO.
  • He will take over from incumbent Rakesh Sarna, who is stepping down on 20th September.

2. Cabinet approves Ordinance to hike cess on luxury cars to up to 25%.

  • The Union Cabinet has approved an ordinance to raise the maximum compensation cess that can be levied on two categories of luxury vehicles from 15 % to 25%, over and above the GST rate.
  • The Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said it would only affect luxury cars that used to attract high excise duty of 27% or 30%.

3. BSE board approves another term of 5-years for Ashish Chauhan as CEO.

  • Top Stock exchange BSE’s board has approved another 5-year term for its Chief Ashish Chauhan.
  • Under his leadership BSE has set up country’s first International Exchnage, India International Exchnage at Gandhinagar, GIFT city.

Sports News

1. ICC to send match officials to Pak for first time since 2009.

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed former West Indies captain Richie Richardson as the march referee for the 3-match T20 Independence Cup between Pakistan and the World XI side.
  • This will be the first match since 2009 that ICC match official will oversee cricket in Pakistan.

2. Bangladesh defeated Australia for the first time in history.

  • Bangladesh registered its first ever Test win over Australia after defeating them by 20 runs in the first test.
  • All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan finished the match with figures of 10/153 to help Bangladesh register their 10th win in test cricket history.
