1.CSE is the top Environment Policy Think Tank in India.
- The Center for Science and Environment(CSE) has been ranked the top environment policy think tanks in India while it has secured the 16th position in global rankings.
- The rank was given by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program(TTCSP) of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. CSE has been ranked 2nd in India in the ‘Energy and Resource Policy Think Tanks’.
2.Pelican Festival held at Atakapa Bird Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh.
- The Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to hold the first ever one-day Pelican festival at the Atakapa Bird Sanctuary.
- Atakapa village is located on the borders of the Krishna and the West Godavari districts.
3.Sushma Swaraj attended Opening Ceremony of Al-Janadriyah Fest in Saudi Arabia.
- Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister, attended the opening ceremony of the 32nd Al-Janadriyah festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
- During her three-day visit, she will discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
4.President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated Mahamastakabhisheka Utsav.
- The 88th Mahamastakabhisheka Utsav of Lord Gomateshwara has been inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind in Hassan district of Karnataka.
- This ceremony takes place once in 12 years.
International News
1.Moscow witnessed heaviest snowfall in 100 years.
- Moscow, Russian capital, witnessed its heaviest snowfall in over 100 years as one month’s worth of snow has fallen in two days.
- The snowfall has toppled over 2,000 trees, while a falling tree and collapsing power line has left one person dead and five others wounded.
2.India slammed UN Sanctions Committees on secretive operations.
- Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Ambassador to UN, slammed the Sanctions Committees for taking decisions beyond “the gaze of public knowledge”.
- This came after China vetoed declaring Jaish-e-Mohammad chief a global terrorist. He said that no rationale is provided for such anonymous vetoing of a submission.
3.US could lift aid suspension if Pak acts against terror.
- US could lift the suspension of security assistance to Pakistan if it takes “decisive and sustained” actions against terror groups, said the US State Department.
- The US has suspended at least $900 million in security assistance to Pakistan last month.
4.Most Powerful rocket of SpaceX has been launched towards Mars.
- The US-based SpaceX has successfully launched the world’s most powerful operational rocket Falcon Heavy towards Mars.
- Falcon Heavy’s thrust and capacity are the highest since NASA’s Saturn V, which carried astronauts to the Moon. Founder and CEO of SpaceX is Elon Musk.
Business News
1.RBI kept repo rate at 6%, unchanged for the third time.
- The RBI has kept the repo rate, the rate at which banks borrow from RBI, steady at 6% for the third time in a row during its sixth bi-monthly monetary policy review.
- This comes after retail inflation in December rose to a 17-month high of 5.21%.
2.Investors lose Rs10 lakh crore in just 6 days.
- Following the sell-off in world markets, investors have lost nearly Rs10 lakh crore in just 6 days.
- The slump in BSE benchmark SENSEX continued with a decline of 1,274.35 points to hit the day’s lowest at 33,482.81
3.“We have made a Maharaja a bhikari”: MoS Aviation on Air India.
- Minister of State for Aviation Jayant Sinha, on asking about who is responsible for the debt-ridden national carrier Air India, said Air India was Maharaja and we have made Maharaja a bhikari(beggar).
- He later said that the investigative agencies are working and as the process unfolds, we’ll find out who the perpetrators are.

1.Jhulan Goswami became the first woman in the world to take 200 ODI wickets.
- Jhulan Goswami, Indian women’s cricket team pacer, has become the first woman in the world to take 200 wickets in ODI cricket.
- Goswami achieved the feat playing in her 166th ODI against South Africa.
2.Smriti Mandhana became the first Indian woman to hit ODI tons in 3 way nations.
- Opener Smriti Mandhana slammed a 129-ball 135 against South Africa at Kimberley on Wednesday to become the first Indian woman cricketer to smash ODI hundreds in three away countries.
- The century was also the first by an Indian woman against South Africa in South Africa.
