National News

1.Indra Nooyi becomes ICC’s first independent female director.

• Indra Nooyi, Pepsico Chairman and CEO, has been appointed as the International Cricket Council’s(ICC) first-ever independent female director.
• In order to improve the global governance of the sport, the introduction of an Independent Director, who must be a female, was approved in June 2017. Headquarters of ICC are at Dubai, The UAE.

2.South Central Railway becomes first railway zone with complete LED lighting at stations.

• The South Central Railway(SCR) has become the first railway zone in the country to complete 100% LED lighting at all the stations under its jurisdiction.
• The SCR has been on the forefront of adopting energy conservation measures.

3.NHAI to start a Pilot Project on Delhi-Mumbai National Highways.

• The National Highways Authority of India(NHAI) will start a pilot project “pay as you use” on the Delhi-Mumbai Highway to study and implement the ability of the system in the country.
• The project involves a satellite-based electronic toll collection system running on GPS/GSM technology for around 500 commercial vehicles on Delhi-Mumbai National Highway.

4.ASH TRACK mobile app launched by RK Singh.

• RK Singh, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, launched a web-based monitoring system and a Fly Ash mobile app named ASH TRACK.
• These platforms will enable better management of the ash produced by thermal power plants by providing an interface between fly ash producers and potential ash users.

International News

1.Global Intellectual Property Index released.

• According to the US Chambers of Commerce report, India ranked 44th among 50 nations in the International Intellectual Property(IP) Index.
• Top three countries in the list are the USA, the United Kingdom and Sweden respectively.

2.Poultry import from India banned in Saudi Arabia.

• Over an outbreak of a bird flu virus in the state of Karnataka, Saudi Arabia has temporarily banned imports of live birds, hatching eggs and chicks from India.
• The ban was issued in accordance with the warming released by the World Organisation for Animal Health which reported that the virus killed nine birds in India in Dec 2017.

3.Wanted to send envoy but dates did not suit India: Maldives.

• Ahmed Mohamed, High Commissioner of Maldives, said that his country wanted to send its special envoy to India but the visit was cancelled as it was informed that the dates were not suitable for the Indian Government.
• This has come after, it was reported that the Maldives, amid of its political crisis, send its envoy to ‘friendly countries’ but not India.

4.Canadian Magazine charges men more than women to reflect gender pay gap.

• Maclean’s, Canadian magazine, will charge men 26% more for a copy of its latest issue in a bid to highlight the gender pay gap.
• The magazine said, “We hope this issue will stir urgent conversation already happening around the world”.

Business News
1.CCI imposed fine on Google for unfair business practices.

• The penalty is being imposed on Google for infringing anti-trust conduct. The head office of CCI is at New Delhi and the Chairperson is Devender Kumar.

2.Hardayal Prasad has been appointed as SBI Card MD and CEO.

• Hardayal Prasad has replaced Vijay Jasuja and now has become the new Managing Director and CEO of the country’s second largest credit card issuer.
• HDFC bank is India’s largest credit card issuer.

3.Air India’s net loss widened to over Rs.5,700 crores in 2016-17.

• In FY17, National carrier Air India’s net loss has widened to Rs.5,765.16 crore as compared to Rs.3,836 crore in FY16.
• However, its operating profit more than doubled to Rs.298 crore.

4.Qualcomm rejected Broadcom’s takeover offer.

• US mobile chipmaker Qualcomm rejected Broadcom’s $121 billion takeover bid saying that the offer “materially undervalues” the company.
• In last year also Qualcomm rejected the takeover offer of Broadcom of $103 billion.

Sports News
1.Khelo India School Games concluded.

• The first Khelo India School Games concluded in New Delhi having Haryana ranking first in the overall medal tally with 38 gold and 26 silver.
• Maharashtra with 36 gold finished second while Delhi came third.

2.Lasith Malinga likely to retire.

• Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, who went unsold at the 2018 IPL auctions, hinted at possible retirement, saying he is mentally done with cricket.
• Malinga was named as the bowling mentor of Mumbai Indians.
