1. Avowed
That has been asserted, admitted, or stated publicly.
Usage: Other state platforms and the leaders of the party avowed that same mission.
2. Adversary
One’s opponent in a contest, conflict, or dispute.
Usage: Davis beat his old adversary in the quarter-finals.
3. Steamroller
a) Of a government or other authority forcibly pass a measure by restricting debate or otherwise overriding opposition.
Usage: The government’s trying to steamroller a law through.
b) Force someone into doing or accepting something.
Usage: This is a new attempt to steamroller the organization into professional reforms.
4. Pauperize
Make very poor or impoverish.
Usage: The party pauperized the country while claiming to be empowering its people.
Pauperism is a term meaning poverty or generally the state of being poor.
5. Ramification
A complex or unwelcome consequence of an action or event.
Usage: Any change is bound to have legal ramifications.
6. Throw in the towel
To give up on some endeavour. To quit or abandon something; to admit defeat or failure.
Usage: I’ve been working on this book for over a year, and I’m getting nowhere with it. I think I’m ready to throw in the towel.
7. Assuage
a) Make an unpleasant feeling less intense.
Usage: The letter assuaged the fears of most members.
b) Satisfy an appetite or desire.
Usage: An opportunity occurred to assuage her desire for knowledge.
8. Quid pro quo
In common law, quid pro quo indicates that an item or a service has been traded in return for something of value, usually when the propriety or equity of the transaction is in question. A contract must involve consideration: that is, the exchange of something of value for something else of value.
Usage: The most logical explanation is that the wrestlers made a quid pro quo agreement: you let me win today, when I really need the victory, and I’ll let you win the next time.
9. Tormentor
A person who inflicts severe mental or physical suffering on someone.
Usage: They help victims of domestic violence escape their tormentors.
10. Conduit
A channel for conveying water or other fluid.
Usage: Nearby springs supplied the conduit which ran into the brewery.
Political parties act as a conduit through which interests and issues of the people get represented in Parliament.
11. Bourse
A stock market in a non-English-speaking country.
Usage: Bourse officials said the rest of the building complex was operating normally.
