Article Name:The different ways we do the same things
Author Name:Ruchir Joshi
Source:The Hindu
Category: Creativity

Summary for this article:

The article talks about the “process”. The process here is the approach that we have for different situations in life, for problem solving, for creativity. The author says that everyone has a unique way to handle a problem or to exercise creativity. He comes up with three different examples, all in different situations and how the people involved had their own opinion and reason about the process. The first person is his friend who solves Sudoku and for him the point is not to necessarily solve but to get his mind going in the morning. The second person is Subrata Mitra who shot all Satyajit Ray’s film, he describes how he used to prepare for the shots and would usually take a long time while other artists had to wait. The writer thinks that perhaps he needed this process to render great takes. The third example is that of a friend who is a cook and the writer assists him to shop for all the fresh ingredients. Here again the author is trying to describe this event as a unique process.

Article Name:Hinduism as a holistic vision of life
Author Name: Mata Amritanandamayi
Source:Times of India
Category:Spirituality

Summary for this article:

This article talks about the holistic view of the world. Even though God is everything, we see everything around us as distinct entities because we have not awakened to this realization. We like some objects and dislike others, and thus, life takes on the nature of happiness and sorrow. But when we awaken to our own true reality, ‘I’ and ‘you’ cease to be. One can fashion from clay a donkey, horse, mouse and lion. Though different in name and form, yet in essence, they are all just clay. One must have the eye to see the clay in the diverse names and forms. In the same way, we must alter our vision, which beholds plurality in the diverse names and forms of the universe.

Those who have realized the Truth feel the pain of others as their own. Hindu culture is the sum total of experiences that the rishis, who lived in different ages and who encountered the Truth, had. Hence, Hinduism is not a religion that was created by any individual. It is not a principle that is contained in any one scriptural text, but a holistic vision of life.

Words to learn from this article:

Holistic : characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.
Myriad : a countless or extremely great number of people or things.
Hitherto: until now

Article Name:The long road ahead
Author Name:Lyla Bavadam
Source: Frontline
Category: Current Affairs

Summary for this article:

The article is a commentary on the plight of farmers of Maharashtra. It describes the agrarian distress that has brought various communities (farmers, adivasis etc) together to match from Nashik to Mumbai’s Azad maidan. The article describes the minute details of the march and how it was planned. The All India Kisan Sabha had two demands which included full loan waiver and implantation of M.S Swaminathan’s committee recommendation on MSP.But the bone of contention was the refusal by govt to set mSP for tur dal.The issue remains unresolved.

The loan waiver promised by the govt is yet to be sanctioned. The article goes on to list other agricultural problems which had natural origin. The agenda of the march was expanded to include Adivasi rights over forest land that they had been tilling.Nashik is a tribal district and so Adivasi farmers joined the march. The demand for loan waiver is just the tip of the iceberg called agrarian crisis.  Loan waivers, though essential, are a knee-jerk response to the problem. The cycle of drought, crop failure, poor returns and debt is well known, and though structured loan waivers are an essential part of the solution, real issues require intensive involvement and budgetary allocation by government institutions. The article throws light on the ignored demerits of Green revolution and its environmental impact and how it perpetuated a cycle of debt.

The writer strongly condemns the issue of rules and guidelines for the journalists. He could not make sense of the rules as he believes that the journalists of mainstream media are generally a lowly paid, miserable and idealistic creatures.
